Welcome to our information page. Here you will find all the necessary information about The Karlovian. And in case you were wondering…
(Charles university = Univerzita Karlova) + (ian suffix: “from”) = Karlovian
Our Background
The Karlovian is an online media platform hosted by PPEople, a student society of the PPE program at Charles University, Prague. To clarify here, by “PPE program,” we refer to the interdisciplinary Oxford-style degree focusing on Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. Students of PPE often pursue lucrative careers in policy work, diplomacy, finance, and most notably, journalism, which is crucial to this project. Thus, while it may appear unusual for The Karlovian to be hosted by PPE, primarily a political science program, instead of a journalism program, PPE holds the belief that nearly everything we encounter in our daily lives is rooted in the amalgamation of three disciplines: Politics, Economics, and Philosophy.
At the core of The Karlovian, we believe that applying students’ learning in tandem with participation in a ‘Real World’ medium is vital for future success. Therefore, the symbiosis between the PPE program, immersing students in interdisciplinary coursework, and the Karlovian, providing a platform for cultivating and refining essential skills, is invaluable for students entering their careers. The skills developed while producing media for The Karlovian can help transition to journalistic careers and also translate effectively into the political, diplomatic, and economic sectors. Because allowing for students to provide concrete examples of published expertise in any application, will undoubtedly allow students to stand out as top-notch candidates.
Our Mission
Here we believe it is first important to mention that while we are partnered with and aligned with the PPE program, we are not exclusive to PPE students. We maintain that although our institutional goals align best with the PPE program, any and all involvement between students from differing faculties, programs, and student organizations is undoubtedly beneficial for all parties involved. Furthermore, it is important to say here that Charles University, and any of its constituent parts, do not take any responsibility for the content published by the students on this platform. Which is important to mention in regards to our mission as this fact allows for students who while a part of the university and its programs, are allowed to express themselves freely and fully within The Karlovian.
When it comes to publishing, our primary focus is on generating written content through our columnists, all the while collaborating with our talented team of designers and social media personnel for promotion. Additionally, we actively support our university’s chapter of European Horizons, providing them with a dedicated section called EH@CUNI. By featuring their articles, we aim to help amplify their role as a policy incubator and facilitate the dissemination of their ideas to a broader audience.
Lastly, and most importantly, we would like to discuss our content objectives. At The Karlovian, we seek to bridge the gap between locals, international students, and expats in Prague. While there is an abundance of information available about what to do in your first few weeks or what might interest both the English-speaking and Czech communities individually, we have observed a significant lack of tailored content for those genuinely interested in making Prague their home while living, working, studying, and learning to integrate. Therefore, our columnists are dedicated to informing and educating readers about the events and developments in this beautiful city, as well as the wider world. All of this is presented from the unique and evolving perspective of students.
What we do, and what we want to do!
As mentioned earlier, our primary focus lies in producing and hosting written content. Our resident columnists are responsible for crafting stories on a monthly basis that revolve around selected categories. Apart from our columnists, we are always open to ad-hoc submissions. Our editors review submissions and engage with authors in order to prepare them for posting. Simultaneously, our university’s chapter of European Horizons consistently publishes serious academic work, presenting unique and groundbreaking content in the form of “Bite-Sized” academic articles.
That being said, we are actively exploring expansion into the realm of multimedia. Podcasts, photo-essays, and video content are all on the horizon. With that in mind, we want to emphasize that we welcome all students of Charles University and are continuously seeking new recruits. So, if you are interested in getting involved, we invite you to consider filling out the form below, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
