Libraries

1. National Library of Technology (NTK)

NTK is a beautiful, award-winning library in Prague 6. Featuring six floors, a café and over 1,200 seats of various kinds, NTK is a student favorite. Even better, floor three is open until 2am and there’s an after-hours study room on the ground floor that is open all throughout the night. However, it’s best to get there early as it’s typically very busy and can take quite a while to find a free seat sometimes.

2. The National Library of the Czech Republic (Klementinum)

Situated in the city center, the National Library is large and beautiful. Whereas NTK is modern, Klementinum has a dark academia feel with its historic architecture and wonderful art. The large reading room (to the right of the security gate) is excellent to study in and is always filled with very focused local and international students. The library requires either a daily or yearly pass to get in and requires you to check your bag and coat in the cloak room before entering.

3. Academy of Sciences Library

The Academy of Sciences Library is located across from the National Theatre and boasts an enchanting interior. With huge ornate archways, marble lamp posts and gold detailing, its atmosphere makes for a great working environment. Although the library is only open during the week from 9am to 7pm, it has internet access and a wide-range of English-language books on art, science, politics and history, as well as journals and periodicals.

Cafés

1. CafeDu

CafeDu is a study café, opened by a local PhD student and is open 24/7. The ground floor acts as a normal café (although it is still filled with students with laptops nonetheless) and the first floor of the café acts as a study zone. It’s very popular with students, has free wifi and can fulfil all your coffee and pastry needs (until 10pm on weekdays and 9pm on the weekends.)

2. Gram Café & Bistro

Gram is located in Vinohrady, has excellent food and good coffee. It’s a large two story café with lots of tables and a wonderful, industrial atmosphere. It’s open every day of the week from 8am to 10pm, and on the weekends from 9am to 10pm.

From the buzz of cozy cafes to the tranquility of hidden nooks, Prague offers a diverse palette of study havens, each with its unique charm. The best part about studying in cafes and libraries is the ‘non-verbal motivation’ that comes along with it. If you’re in bed scrolling through instagram or on the couch watching “just one more episode,” try changing up the setting, you’ll be all the better for it.
